Summer 2009 - Newport, R.I.

A girlfriend in college once shared with me her Aunt's favorite saying: "Girl on a mission, finds a man with a mansion." When we visited Newport, R.I. in July, this phrase kept playing in my head along with "over-the-top" as we walked through the ginormous rooms that the Vanderbilts, the Berwinds and the likes once spent their summers many, many years ago. It was really mind blowing to see the facilities and amenities these mansions had to offer for a 6-9 week escapade each year.

It's easy to suffer mansion overload, so we had to choose wisely which ones we thought were worth visiting. We ended up in these super abodes.

Rosecliff is probably my favorite ~~house~~ mansion. It's not too cluttered and decorated with gilded trimmings - less is indeed more.

After experiencing a misty and dreary day before, we were very fortunate to enjoy a beautiful, sunny Sunday. It was just perfect for a walk by the cliffs. Definitely not to be missed if one were to visit Newport.

Trish's Family - Maidenhead, U.K.

During our trip to England for Janet & Darren's wedding, we stayed with Trish and her family in Lower Cookham, Maidenhead. If you read my earlier entry last year, Trish came to the States and lived in Florida in 2008. Well, the Radotics have since moved back to the U.K. for Milko's job. My last trip there was about 8 years ago sans the three Radotic boys - Max, Ollie & Hugo.

We had lots of fun catching up on old times. Trish & her family played the perfect host. We were well-fed, with warm breakfast greeting us each morning before making our way to London for our daily romp.

This post is especially for Trish and her family. Thank you so much for your kind hospitality!!!

Janet & Darren's Wedding, Burton-on-Trent, U.K.

April showers bring May flowers. Spring time in the northern hemisphere is always lovely. Even lovelier when there's a wedding in the lush, green English countryside!

My sister-in-law, Janet married her handsome beau, Darren Luff on a beautiful spring afternoon on May 22, 2009. We flew across the Atlantic for this happy occasion.

Washington D.C. - Part 3 (Final)

Mount Vernon

I have always wanted to go to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. We missed it 6 years ago but not this time. Off we went to Mount Vernon on a rainy Saturday morning. Great! The rain came down hard and didn't stop till 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.

In spite of the rain, there were plenty of visitors. We began our tour at the Visitor's Center and watched a 15 minute film about Mount Vernon and George Washington. We learned that he inherited Mount Vernon from his brother in 1761, and the house was not the large mansion that we see today. Additions to the house came slowly with the large dining room being added last around the end of the Revolutionary War.

Another attraction in Mount Vernon is the final resting place of George Washington and his wife, Martha. A tomb was built for him underneath the Rotunda in the Capitol Building, but his will stipulated that he was to be buried at his beloved Mount Vernon. The empty tomb in the Capitol now houses a bier used to support the casket/coffin of those who lain in state in the Rotunda.

The rain hasn't stopped and we were getting hungry. We took a chance and waited in-line for a table at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. Everyone had the same idea. Fortunately, it was not a long wait.

After lunch, the rain turned to light drizzle and on our way to Alexandria, it cleared up. Perfect! We stopped in this little quaint town and walked along King Street, upon recommendation from my co-worker.

Washington D.C. - Part 1

After a six year hiatus, we decided it was time to visit Washington D.C. again. The Capitol Building was under renovation for many years and reopened last year. We started our journey there on Good Friday. It was a good drive on the I-95 South and made it to Washington by 10.45 a.m. Thanked our lucky stars as we found a 3 hour parking spot right outside the Capitol Building. We had tickets for the tour at 1.00 p.m. but decided to go in earlier. We were admitted to the 12.10 p.m. session. Yes!!! A great start to a great weekend.

Before the tour, we took a stroll around the Capitol Building and visited the U.S. Botanical Garden.

After visiting the Rotunda, I came to understand why this special hall is such a befitting place for the public to come and say their final farewell to eminent citizens and government officials. There's an unutterable feeling of awe and grandeur when you step inside the Rotunda.

The Library is connected to the Capitol Building by an underground passage, but one can also choose to access it the "normal" way i.e. from above ground :) However, the underground sounds much more fun and conjures up images from National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

Formidable arches and frescoes adorned the Library of Congress. Unfortunately, no photographs in the main research area.

Unfortunately, the Cherry Blossom Festival was a bit of a disappointment. Warm weather has rendered the sakura trees almost bare around the Basin.

Eureka!

Our goldfish is multiplying. After displaying unquestionable mating behavior in the tank for the past few days, we woke up one morning and found fish eggs all over the aquarium.

Update: the eggs have hatched and we can see 4-5 tiny eyelashes with two eyes. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to capture it on camera. We'll just have to wait till it's bigger. Keeping our fingers crossed that they'll survive.

Winter Reigns: From the South East to the North East

The quick run-down:

Bergen County schools, universities and colleges closed
up to 2 hours of delayed opening in State and private offices
winter storm warning till 4 p.m.
blustery winds and low temps. (20F/-8C), layers a must!
snow is too powdery and any attempt at making a snowman will not work
powdery snow blowing into your face feels like a million splinters cutting your skin - aw!

Just as we thought we had seen the last of winter, it made an unexpected return last night through much of today. Living true to the saying, "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb," we are now entering the second phase of this winter storm. Our area is expected to receive a total of 7 - 11 inches of powdery snow by this afternoon. Although it's not the worst, it is still not a good idea to be out and about if you don't have to.

Luckily, my boss agreed to switch my flex day (i.e. day off) from Friday to today. Phew! Treacherous road conditions and commuting delays aren't something that a person who has an hour long commute to and fro NY City wants to hear. So, I've decided to stay home and bake some meringue puffs to take my mind of work and my flooded Lotus Notes in-box. Hmm...

Arthur's Landing - A Eulogy of Some Sort...

I've been telling my better half for the past 2 years that I would like to have dinner at Arthur's Landing in Weehawken, N.J. Why? (1) They have a magnificent view of the Manhattan skyline, and (2) Adrian had raved about the duck he ate at a corporate event he attended there.

Not long after we came back from our vacation in Malaysia, we went to Arthur's for an early anniversary dinner. It was a quiet Sunday night. The moon was full and bright, but the weather outside was frightfully frigid. We were seated at a nice table right by the window. I ordered the seafood bouillabaisse, while Adrian had canard (what else?!)

I'm really glad that we finally made the effort to dine at Arthur's Landing. Not long after U.S. Airways Flight 1549 made the miraculous water landing right by the restaurant's deck, it closed its doors for good. I read that the restaurant's staff served passengers with warm soup and coffee, and provided dry clothes from the Chef's closet.

I'm sure the City of Weehawken regrets loosing such a fine restaurant. Seems like the economic and financial crisis has spilled over to every faucet of our lives. The restaurant's Chairman posted this message on their website.

Fairy Cave, Bau

The Monsoon = rainy season is not an ideal time to go caving but this is an interesting limestone cave that Adrian photographed during our recent trip home. Fairy Cave is situated north of Bau in Sarawak. It was the center of the 19th Century gold rush and site of a bloody rebellion between Chinese and British rulers back in the days.

Fairy Cave has very unusual stalagmites and stalactites formations, thanks to the humid weather condition. Most caves in Malaysia date back to the Stone Age but some caves in my hometown are believed to be over 60 millions years old!

Why is it called Fairy Cave? Well, nobody could tell me why but my internet research revealed that the deity like stalagmites and stalactites attracted many Chinese Buddhist and Taoist devotees to the cave. This could be the reason for its name.

Bruno & Lizzie - two years later

Figo's empty sleeping quarters in my home was a sad reminder of how we lost him earlier last year. My Mom & Dad misses him very much. The ever loyal "son" who would follow his every step around the house and garden. But, life goes on and soon enough, Bruno established himself as the dominant male Dachshund in my parents' household :)

Like clock-work, Bruno and his sister, Lizzie would wake my parents up early in the morning and go to bed at 9 p.m. sharp. And, no, they do not need a clock to tell time. Wonderful isn't it? Of course, there is the occasional rat catching session that might allow them to be out for an extra hour or so.

My Birthday Celebration

When we landed in Kuching, it was also my birthday :)

My Mom had ordered some special dishes from The Heritage - our favorite restaurant opened by the former chef and staff of Tsui Hua Lau. THL was the most popular place to go for a wedding, new moon and birthday celebration. These days, with Grandma confined to the home and Grandpa's weak eye-sight, it was difficult for us to have a meal outside. Kuching isn't a disable friendly city. Something which I hope will change in time to come.

Anyway, take a look at our little feast at home.

I was so tired and jet-lagged after the long journey yet this was no time to sleep over good food.

No birthday is complete without a cake. That's me and my grandparents.

Home for the Holidays

Adrian and I spent the last 2 weeks of December and New Year's in Kuching. What a treat to be able to go home and see our families, friends and relatives. Even for a short while, it was a trip worth taking. The long flight was not what we looked forward to - 7 hours from Newark to Stockholm, 11 hours from Stockholm to Kuala Lumpur and thereafter, another 1 hr 40 mins to our hometown in Kuching. Argh!!!

Black Friday & The Phantom of the Opera

Instead of camping outside Best Buy for 18 hours or getting trampled to death at the doors of Wal-Mart and the likes, we spent the day after Thanksgiving far away from obsessed shoppers and the madness of Black Friday.

Here we were in the comfort of Bubba Gump, once again, just before our afternoon matinee of Phantom of the Opera. After all these years, I finally made it to the most widely acclaimed musical on earth. Phantom is now the longest running show on Broadway. It celebrates its 20th year this year and what a treat! We found very good seats (Front Center Mezzanine) in spite of the last minute purchase. I won't vouch the same for Equus though. Lines for Equus snaked outside Broadway & 8th. Avenue. Yes, throngs of people lining up to see Daniel Radcliffe baring all on stage. ~~Would have also been interesting but~~ Phantom is still won me over.

What's good and bad? Being such an old theater - 80 years, the seating in the Majestic is extremely crammed and the slope of the stair case is quite extreme. However, the superb performance from the casts and amazing theatrical effects made up for it. Was it worth every $$$? YES!!! After all these years, I am still entranced by the music and story.

Thanksgiving 2008

Thanksgiving 2008 - The Empire State Building in happy, fall colors

Another year, another Thanksgiving. This year, I gave my apron the day off. While my apron hung quietly at home, we headed over to Pointin Still at Main Street, Hackensack for an Irish Thanksgiving dinner.

Also, we thought we might as well do something different and lay off turkey-lurkey until we go home for X'mas this year. So, who made our Thanksgiving meal instead? Chicken Little and Porky ;)

Chicken Kilarney - the Jalapeno, whiskey cream sauce was perfect

Broiled Virginia Ham with glaced fruits - very delicious! Highly recommended.

The down side: I think these 2 dishes are only available on Thanksgiving Day :(

For dessert, we shared a slice of Bailey's Irish Cream Cake :) To our surprise, the sweetness was just right!

Overall, Pointin Still was an excellent choice for our Thanksgiving Dinner.

Malaysian Cuisine at Penang in Lodi, NJ

After not being home for almost 2 years, my supply of spices and pastes are running extremely low. I'm out of Sarawak laksa paste and my once filled to the brim curry powder bottle will soon be a distant memory. Thank goodness, I'm going back to Malaysia in 4 weeks :) Time to restock!

All right, back to Penang. When Penang opened up in Lodi earlier this year, it was a dream come true. We had heard rumblings of Penang from a fellow Malaysian we met at a local eatery. At least, we don't have to drive all the way to Hoboken or Edison to satisfy our satay, roti canai, nasi lemak, etc. cravings.

Several weeks ago, we went to Penang for a nice Sunday night dinner before heading back to our usual work day routine. Adrian is more of a regular than I in Penang because his office is only 5 minutes away from the restaurant. Did I mention that Penang is also a good place to eat if you are looking for an express lunch? Anyway, back to dinner...

Doesn't this look like kampua mee? The dish is called BBQ roasted pork lo mee* (dry).

*Mee = mein = noodles.

Hint: Could have been better if the soy sauce doesn't have a slight bitter after taste.

Scenic Drive

More fall foliage adventures this weekend! This time we started off nearby at Hackensack River and then, drove further north on the Palisades Parkway to Sunnyside in Irvington, New York. For those who are not familiar with Sunnyside, it was the home of Washington Irving - author of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle, etc.

Sunnyside was the only home owned by Washington Irving. He bought the house (then a neglected cottage) when he was 52 years old and added extensions to it over the years. Irving never married but came close once. Unfortunately, his intended fell ill with tuberculosis and passed away. Although Irving remained a bachelor until his death on the eve of the American Civil War, Sunnyside was never empty. He had many nieces that stayed in the house and the kitchen was one of the most modern during the classical/romantic eras, with running hot water and a kitchen stove.

It's a Small Word After All

Somebody went to Disneyland for work and still found time to have fun. Yup! Adrian recently spent 5 days in Anaheim, California. ~~Apparently, he attended a Market Research event. Yeah, yeah.~~ Adrian isn't exactly a Disney virgin having been there twice and to Disney World in Florida. I believe he once told me that he went to all these exciting places, even before he started college back in the 90s. What would Daddy have said, huh?! Well, it's always good to get the distraction out of the way before diving into some serious studies ;)
