Chicago Day 1
A very beautiful day. Blue skies, sunny weather.
Sears Tower
Spring must be the best time to visit Chicago. Unlike the endless lines of Empire State Building, there were hardly any crowd at the Sears Tower. It was a pleasant surprise. We were "beamed up" to the Skydeck in 60 secs.
Here are 2 views of the lake front from the Skydeck.
To the left - Navy Pier, Millenium Park, Grant Park.
To the right - the Planetarium, Museum of Natural History, Aquarium and Soldier Field Stadium.
The architectural wonders of Chi-town.
Millenium Park
Cloud Gate or the Bean (local nickname for this unique looking structure). People go there and take pictures of their own reflection. Vanity wasn't in my cards that day, ha! ha!
Spring blooms at the park.
Pritzker Pavilion & Harris Theater plus a bit of the Great Lawn.
Saffron monks added some color to the park. They were admiring the Bean earlier on.
Instead of the usual straightforward bridge, BP came up with this "S" shape bridge for people like you and I to "ess" our way across the road.
Further down Columbus Drive, I had this preconceived image about Buckingham Fountain at Grant Park. Waters spouting and spraying out in grand fashion and all the works.
Like this, thanks to the internet research I did prior to my trip.
Instead, this was what we got. A bone-dry fountain with a big crack on the top portion *sigh*. No water! No spouting/spraying fountain! It was still under renovation. What a major disappointment :(
Field Museum of Natural History. The entrance facade (Roman columns) is similar to NY's Metropolitan Museum. Even the exhibits are alike. So we gave it a pass. Night at the Museum all over again?! Nah...
Adrian testing a komodo dragon's patience at the Shedd Aquarium.
A gigantic man & his equally big catch outside the Aquarium.
Here I am on top of the Shedd Aquarium grounds with the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan in the background.
We got ourselves a 3 day CTA pass for $12 per person. Cheap! So, after exploring this part of the City, we took the #29 Bus to ...
Navy Pier (since 1916)
The 3,000 ft long Pier by Lake Michigan.
One can always rent a double bike to paddle around the Pier. Cute!
McD's ferris wheel for the young at heart.
Carousel for the even younger ones or not so young ones :)
Shakespeare on the Pier (no pun intended).
The decommissioned third USS Chicago anchor outside the Grand Ballroom.
Blue vs. Blue - the blue waters of Lake Michigan meets the blue sky. My favorite photo!
This is for all you yacht lovers! Lots of luxury yachts at the Pier - for sightseeing & perhaps, a private function.

Someday, I wanna leave my marks at the Buckingham fountain since I was a loyal fan of "Married with Children". Al Bundy rules!
cooknengr: an Al Bundy fan! i always like the show's opening song, "Love and Marriage". that's about it. couldn't handle Peg Bundy's bouffant hairdo.
Very nice pics !
Dh and I both do not like big cities; but we both love travel. While growing up, his parents had a RV, they been to most states except Alaska&Hawaii.
We love outdoor scenery (country quaint town) more than tall buildings. We love areas around Virgina/TN/N.Carolina (esp fall trails along Blue Ridge Parkway).
Dh love mountain (raise from Lookout Mt, TN :)), I love sea / beaches. That is one of the reason I love Florida, so many beautiful beaches.
Thank you for sharing.
Jamy
Jamy, thanks for dropping by again :) yeah, we love to travel and love to learn about new places; cities, towns, the outback, etc. we don't discriminate or have any favorites. i can imagine the BR Parkway to be very beautiful and scenic in the fall. we like to drive up along the poconos and admire the myriad autumn colors too.
Yes, we love traveling too. After I left Australia, I took 1 yr back pack to Europe etc. Dh has inherited his late mom traveling lust :)- They were on the road every summer during the uni holidays. Both in laws were uni professors.
Have u been to places in N.England ? It is beautiful there during summer time. In fact, we are thinking of going for our summer vacation this yr - Rhode Island, Vermont, Cape code, Nantucket, Providence etc... But, we have to change plan cos I am going back to Kuching cos my dad is very sick.
We are very biased, ha ha ha ha.
We don't like big cities, we prefer smaller cities or towns.
We love mountains so we often visit mountainous areas TN, Virginia, N Carolina and Georgia are our favorite. We love the areas around Franklin / Highlands areas. We were there 2005 summer and we stayed in a very nice bed and breakfast inn at highland. We also love Asheville (NC). Areas around Biltmore Estate are very beautiful.
So much to see :). We hope to buy our RV in 2 yrs time :)-
hi Jamy, sorry to hear about your dad. good luck with the RV purchase! road trips are great ;)
Thank you serene.
It is sad abt my dad. He has been teaching tai-chi all these yrs and was very fit until 1 mth ago. MRI found out he has brain tumor, and is oleri 4th stage. Both my siblings have been great in terms of taking care of my dad while I am so far away....
For us who live so far away, that is one of those things that we wish we can be near them but we cannot.
We enjoy road trip. My 3 yrs old boy has been to 13 states with us on road trip, he is a seasoned traveler :)-.
Thank you.
